Oratory at the Sanctuary
San Juan, Puerto Rico
The Oratory at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Providence was conceived as a place of prayer, reflection, and spiritual encounter, thoughtfully integrated into the hillside landscape of Cupey. Positioned to embrace sweeping views of the city and surrounding mountains, the design seeks to establish a meaningful dialogue between faith, architecture, and nature. Its contemporary form draws inspiration from traditional sacred architecture, creating a serene and welcoming environment where natural light, carefully framed vistas, and a sense of openness enrich the worship experience. The building serves as a quiet refuge within the sanctuary, offering visitors a space for contemplation, devotion, and community gathering.
A restrained palette of natural stone, stucco, warm wood finishes, bronze-toned metalwork, and clay pavers reinforces the project's sense of permanence and timelessness. Inside, the soaring volume and abundant daylight guide attention toward the altar while strengthening the connection between the interior space and the surrounding landscape. Every architectural element was carefully considered to foster an atmosphere of tranquility and reverence, allowing the beauty of the setting to become an integral part of the spiritual journey. The result is a contemporary sacred space that honors tradition while creating a lasting landmark for worship and reflection within the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Providence.
